Discipleship is the second and oft-neglected part of the Great Commission. We are to go into all nations and preach the gospel, and once we have seen people come to the Lord, we are to “teach them all I have commanded you.” Here are some recommended books on discipleship.
Grounded in the Faith by Kenneth Erisman. This is a book for laying a consistent, systematic groundwork for the Christian life. Erisman explains, “The aim of this book is to see the church flourish for the glory of God. We are convinced that by designing this guide to be user-friendly but at the same time keeping Reformation depth, followers of Christ will have a transferable tool to become grounded in the faith.”
An Infinite Journey by Andrew Davis. What Davis attempts to do in this book, and what he accomplishes well, is to map out the journey toward Christian maturity. I completely agree with Donald Whitney who says, “Besides the Bible, it would be difficult to find any other single resource with more biblically sound, theologically rich, pastorally helpful, and practical insight about Christian growth than this book.”
Now What? by Aaron Armstrong. This is a good and trustworthy guide to a new believer’s new life in Christ and one that I trust will prove beneficial to many of God’s people.
Follow Me by David Platt. Where in Radical Platt exposed cultural values and ideas opposed to the gospel, his purpose in Follow Me is “to move from what we let go of to whom he hold on to. I want to explore not only the gravity of what we must forsake in this world, but also the greatness of the one we follow in this world. I want to expose what it means to die to ourselves and to live in Christ.”
