A La Carte (January 29)

wednesday

Today’s Kindle deals include a nice long list that’s well worth checking out. There are books by Paul Washer, James White, and quite a few others.

Logos is offering a deal that will appeal to pastors and scholars; it’s a 3-day flash sale on some fairly technical, highly recommended, and rarely-on-sale commentaries on the gospels and Acts. It includes works by Carson, Marshall, France, Bruce, and others.

(Also, for those who are interested, I noticed that Amazon has a big sale today on puzzles of all things…)

A Cancel Culture Nightmare

Samuel James looks at an issue that cropped up over the past few days. “This episode is one of the most thorough and illuminating examples I’ve ever seen of just how dysfunctional discourse is when it’s conditioned by technology like Twitter. Every single player in this story looks bad.”

Why Everyone Needs Notification Detox

Yup! Turn off most or all of those notifications. “Regardless of what the notifications say or if you opted to receive them, the cumulative effect can be overwhelming. Over the course of a day, notifications are an interruption, affecting your focus and performance.”

What Apostates Don’t Say

“When people walk away from Christianity, there are some common reasons they give. They often stem from an unwillingness to maintain the Bible’s authority in the face of mounting criticism from an increasingly secular world. In some cases, it’s because of morality, other times it’s science, still others it’s the resistance of institutional authority. But there is one thing that I don’t hear an apostate say that should get our attention: They don’t say much about Jesus.”

In This for Life

This is a sweet one from Andrea Burke as she reflects on being “in this for life” with her husband.

Flashback: Do You Believe God Will Save Your Kids?

There are few things I pray for with greater frequency or intensity than the salvation of my children. I long for them to be saved, and long to be able to be able to call them not only my son and daughters, but my brother and sisters. I long for them to profess faith, and for those professions to be proven true.

The devil would love for you to be perfectly happy, so long as you are not holy.

People of all faiths pray. Some pray to gods, some to ancestors, some to nature, and some to the universe, but all speak out words, all utter desires, all hope to be heard. • The Art of Disagreeing

    Keep Calm and Stay Friends

It is hard to disagree with someone you love. It is harder still to disagree well—to retain genuine respect and true friendship despite differing opinions or convictions. And, as we all know by experience, there is just so much to disagree about.
