A La Carte (8/26)

Make the Bible Your Native Tongue – Read this one! “With tweets, blog posts, predigested podcasts, and fingertip access each week to downloads of some of the most engaging Bible teachers in the world, it’s tempting to develop an on-going input of the Bible at the hands of others that overshadows, or even eclipses, input from personal time spent pouring over it on our own.”

Stalin’s Rope Roads – “The mining town of Chiatura, Georgia, surrounded by steep cliffs, is criss-crossed by a network of aging Soviet-era aerial tramways that are still in use today.” Maybe it’s just me, but I found the whole thing fascinating.

When Bradley Became Chelsea – When Bradley Manning declared that he is now Chelsea, the administrators at Wikipedia were left figuring out what name and pronoun to use for him (her?). This article tells what happened, and as it does so, it provides a clear example of the shifting tides when it comes to society’s understanding of gender.

If You Catch Him Right – This is a good word for preachers. “A faithful preacher must be consistent. It is not enough to get it right now and then. Who cares if you know how to preach the word if you choose not to for whatever reason? That’s treason. It’s prostitution. It’s just plain wrong.”

The Price of Citizenship – Al Mohler is always a helpful interpreter of the news. “Anyone who still doubts that the normalization of homosexuality and the legalization of same-sex marriage will represent a seismic shift in the culture at large needs only to look to New Mexico to see that nothing less than religious liberty is now under threat, and in a big way.”

The more you know about Christ, the less you will be satisfied with superficial views of him.

—C.H. Spurgeon

  • Men in the Image of Women and Women in the Image of Men

Men in the Image of Women and Women in the Image of Men

God made men and God made women. God made men distinct from women and women distinct from men. God made men and women equal in worth and value while also making them distinct in some purpose and function. It’s all obvious stuff, this—obvious matters of differences between the sexes.

    Good News at Rock Bottom

Life most certainly brings its challenges. Some of these are just little ruts along the way, some are deep and dark valleys, and some are lower still—the kind of rock bottom experiences that are so dreadful we wonder if we will be able to endure them with our faith intact.
