A La Carte (November 8)

I’m praying for you today, America. The rest of the world is watching and waiting. In victory or triumph, in joy or sorrow, let the gospel shine!

Today’s Kindle deals includes a pretty good-sized list: Creature of the Word by Matt Chandler, Beat God to the Punch and Manhood Restored by Eric Mason, When Missions Shapes the Mission by David Horner, Bible Doctrine by Wayne Grudem, Truth Matters and Truth in a Culture of Doubt by Andreas Kostenberger, and more.

CBD is having a big pre-Black Friday sale and there are some good deals to be had. I’ll leave you sort through it all, but you’ll find Bibles, study Bibles, books by favorite authors, and so on. There’s also a lot of really bad books, so caveat emptor.

Never Let Up in Killing Sin

Never ever. “The Christian life is war, a perpetual battle in which self-crucifixion is the only way to make it off the field alive (Galatians 5:24). But God is bringing us somewhere in sanctification, which means that we’re not stuck sheltered in the trenches waiting for sin’s storm to blow over in death.”

Shame, Sanctification, Singleness, and Marriage

Lore Ferguson Wilbert has a helpful meditation about shame, sanctification, singleness, and marriage. It’s good to read whether you’re single or married.

The 5 C’s of Preaching

Jared Wilson describes preaching under 5 headings. “How do you know you’re preaching a Christian sermon and not simply giving a religious or spiritual lecture?” There’s all the difference in the world.

Sunday Isn’t Enough

Joe Thorn makes an appeal for small group meetings. “As important as this sacred gathering is to the health of the local church, it alone is not enough. Other gatherings are necessary. The people of God must meet together in smaller numbers to carry out the will of God in each others’ lives.”

The Humbled Mother

Parenting does have its ways of humbling us, doesn’t it?

This Day in 1674. 342 years ago today John Milton, English poet and famed author of ‘Paradise Lost,’ died at 65. *

A Letter of Hope

Craig Glassock describes a letter he received that was full of hope.

The Globemakers

I love videos about handcrafted beauty. Here’s a short video about an old-school craft.

Flashback: Hope in a Pornified World

Yes, the world is overrun with pornography, but there is still hope to be found!

God is not a killjoy; he just opposes what kills joy.

Why We Ask So Little of God

Most Christians expect little from God, ask little, and therefore receive little, and are content with little. Though the Bible calls us to pray and though it promises that “the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working,” we can still have very modest expectations of what God will accomplish through…
