A La Carte (November 7)

You are going to notice some pretty big changes around the site today. I moved from one software package to another and, while I was at it, updated the design. I believe things are quite stable, but don’t be surprised if you notice a few hiccups along the way. If you subscribe via email or RSS, I apologize that you received all kinds of old content today. Unfortunately there was no way around it. (For those who are technically minded, scroll down to the bottom and I’ll give more details.)

Today’s Kindle deals include: The complete NIV Application Commentary series, many of which are excellent. You’ll also find deals from Crossway on two Jon Bloom books, a selection from Matthias Media, and much more. Click here to find them.

How to Warm Your Heart in Worship

“So what do we do with passages of Scripture — or lyrics in worship songs — that describe an ideal that does not match our reality? Is it possible to affirm them from the heart without pretense or posturing?”

Giant Snowballs

This I’d love to see: “Nature is getting ready for an epic snowball fight, and it looks like they’re stocking up ammo in Arctic Russia. According to reports, “villagers near the Gulf of Ob seem to have started finding accumulations of perfectly rounded snowballs created by a rare coastal phenomenon.”

What If Our Bibles Rose Up and Judged Us?

Trevin Wax asks that rather intimidating question.

Trinity Western Wins

I had linked to this story a couple of times and am glad to see how it was resolved. “A decisive legal victory in British Columbia has put an evangelical Christian university one step closer in its bid to secure recognition for its proposed law school.”

This Day in 1918. 98 years ago today evangelist William (Billy) Franklin Graham Jr. was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. *

Fear God. Honor the King

Jeremiah Johnson discusses tomorrow and beyond: “Put simply, insurrection and rebellion don’t adorn the gospel. On the other hand, through our good behavior and submission to authority, we can silence those who oppose God’s Word and His people.” (Erik Raymond covers similar ground.)

How Healthy is the Women’s Ministry in Your Church?

Melissa Kruger asks you to diagnose your women’s ministry by asking these 6 questions.

Suffering, Sorrow, Wheelchairs and Eternal Gratitude

Randy Alcorn shares some of what Joni Eareckson Tada has said about gratitude, even while confined to that wheelchair.

Flashback: How I Learned to Embrace the Stand and Greet Time

I may not know you, but I think one thing is safe to say: You do not have as much natural revulsion as I do toward a stand and greet time during a church service. You don’t feel a greater measure of inward terror when you hear a service leader command, “Stand up and greet a few of the people around you.”

A nominal Christian finds Christ useful. A true Christian finds Christ beautiful.

—John Starke

Site updates: To make a long story short, I changed my content management system from Drupal to WordPress. This was a huge project and one that involved a couple of false starts. Thankfully, we eventually figured it out. While we made the change we figured it was time to refresh the design, especially since over 60% of visitors read via mobile devices. This is the first iteration of the site that was mobile-first.

  • The Tallest Trees

The Winds Blow Hardest Against the Tallest Trees

Through the weekend had many questions about Christian leaders who fall. And I expressed that just as the winds blow hardest against the tallest trees, so temptations may press hardest against the leaders who rise the highest. Just as floods press against shallow roots, so seductive desires rise up against those whose fall would bring…

Why We Ask So Little of God

Most Christians expect little from God, ask little, and therefore receive little, and are content with little. Though the Bible calls us to pray and though it promises that “the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working,” we can still have very modest expectations of what God will accomplish through…

  • A Light on the Hill

    A Light on the Hill

In early 2020, CHBC, along with almost every other church in the world, was forced to contend with the opening days of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time Caleb Morell was working as Pastor Mark Dever’s personal assistant. Dever tasked him with finding out how the church had responded to the Spanish flu epidemic a…
